The Sabrent row is a real contradiction, not a gap in my reading. The product page promises "two HDMI outputs" and "up to two displays at 4K/60Hz," while the manual's diagram shows one HDMI port and tells you to connect "your HDMI display" to it. Neither document names MST or DisplayLink.

What the one-cable vendors say about Macs

MST (Multi-Stream Transport) is how a single DisplayPort signal carries two independent screens. macOS doesn't do it for extended desktops. Plugable's knowledge base states it flatly: "MST is not supported on macOS for extended displays." CalDigit says the Mac "will be able to mirror monitors at best," and Dell's Mac support article says both monitors end up "in clone mode."

Three of the five one-cable vendors pass that on, and they don't agree on what you get:

The fourth is TESmart CKS202-P23, and it's the one to be careful with. Its product page says it "supports MST-enabled Windows laptops and MacBooks for an 'ABC' dual-display extension." Its manual (V005) says "devices running Apple's Mac OS, Ubuntu and other operating systems do not support MST mode," and tells Mac owners to connect four USB-C cables, two per computer, instead of two. On a Mac, that turns it into a two-cable switch. The fifth, IOGEAR's GCS1953, never mentions macOS; its OS list is Windows 10 and 11.

Two ways a Mac actually gets two extended screens

Two cables per computer. Each monitor gets its own native stream, so nothing about MST applies. The catch moves to the Mac: it needs two video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt ports and a chip that allows two external displays. TESmart's own page warns that "MacBooks with M1/M2/M3 chips natively support only one extended display," and Level1Techs' Combo page puts it as "Some older MACs have an external monitor limit of 1!" For the Level1Techs unit, "every input besides the bottom USB-C will require a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable," so budget for that cable. CKL's 622T puts it simply: "Dual monitor requires 2 Type C connection from each computer."

DisplayLink. The second and third screens are compressed video over USB, drawn by a driver. That's how StarTech can claim the 129N dock "supports extended dual displays on base Apple M-Series MacBooks." The costs are in TESmart's HDC203-PM24 notes: on macOS, "videos from Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and other HDCP-protected services cannot be displayed through DisplayLink," and the driver "only starts after logging in," so one monitor must be native to see the boot screen. Power delivery numbers don't compare

"PD" was the other big autocomplete cluster (power delivery 11, with power delivery 11), and it's the least consistent column in the census. TESmart's CKS202-P23 and CKS201-M23 list 60 W. Minix lists the K1 at "100W Max, Loss 5~10W," with no charger in the box. IOGEAR's GUD3C04 page says 75 W in one line and 85 W in another. ATEN's US3310 reaches 85 W only after "the first 15W will supply the US3310, the next 10W will supply" port 2. StarTech splits 90 W to the active laptop and 45 W to the standby one; Anker's 554 gives 100 W to one laptop or 65 W to each of two. If your laptop draws more than the switch passes through, keep its own charger plugged in.

What owners hit after the Mac part works

Level1Techs runs a public KVM Helpdesk forum. I pulled every topic in it (728, from March 2018 to 2026-09-08) and matched the title and opening post against Mac terms: 217 mention a Mac. Keyword matching is blunt, so here's what I checked by hand. Sleep and wake words show up in 33 of the 217 Mac threads (15.2%), against 21 of the other 511 (4.1%). I read all 33, and 20 describe a Mac that won't wake or loses displays on wake; the rest mention a Mac in passing. Charging words appear in 17.5% of Mac threads against 9.0%. "Not detected" or "replug" language is common everywhere: 33.6% against 28.4%.
