Alternative to Raspberry Pi 5: 24 Boards, 9 in Stock Today
In August I wrote that the Raspberry Pi's price argument was gone, and that the $175 to $305 a Pi 5 board now costs "buys N100-class alternatives." I made that claim in the Pi 5 vs Mac mini post without checking whether you could actually buy those alternatives. Today I did. I took the 24 boards and mini PCs that turn up whenever someone asks for an alternative to Raspberry Pi 5, and read each one's price and stock on its maker's own store on September 14, 2026. Nine of them could be ordered. Nine were sold out, suspended or delisted. For the other six, I could not find a US price from the maker at all.
I don't own any of these boards; this business runs on an M4 Mac mini. Everything below comes from store pages, spec sheets and owners' threads, with links. The first-person parts are the checking.
Nine of 24 can be ordered today
The list is 12 ARM single-board computers (Orange Pi, Radxa, Hardkernel, Khadas, Banana Pi) and 12 x86 boards and small mini PCs, the ones named in the comparison articles and forum threads I read. "In stock" means at least one configuration could be put in a cart on the maker's store, or on the maker's official Amazon store when its own distributor won't ship to the US.

The x86 column is where it falls apart. Radxa's X4, the credit-card N100 board that was the obvious Pi-shaped x86 answer, is sold out in all seven configurations. Hardkernel's product pages carry a notice that "Production and sales of the ODROID-H4 series have been suspended for the time being due to Intel CPU supply issues," and point to the ODROID-H5 instead. The LattePanda Iota page offers a notify button. On the ARM side, Orange Pi's distributor says "we are currently unable to ship boards and accessories to the United States. All orders placed with a U.S. shipping address will be refunded," which is why the 5 Plus row points at Amazon.
What the nine cost next to a Pi 5
The baseline is still $175 for 8GB and $305 for 16GB at PiShop, unchanged since Raspberry Pi's April 1 increase. At 8GB, one in-stock alternative is within $5 of that: the ROCK 5T at $179.90. The ROCK 4D is $79.90, but only in 6GB. Everything else in stock costs more for the same memory. At 16GB the ODROID-M2 comes in $5 under the Pi, and the rest run $354 to $439.
Board prices undersell the gap, because the Pi needs parts before it is a server. When I priced a 16GB Pi 5 build in August (board, official 27W supply, Active Cooler, case, M.2 HAT+ and a 500GB-class NVMe drive) it came to about $390. The Beelink EQ14 is $369 on Amazon today with 16GB, a 500GB SSD and its power supply inside. The ODROID-H5 is $230, but it ships with no memory, and Hardkernel's own store lists 8GB of DDR5 at $110 and 16GB at $200, both out of stock when I looked. A board-only x86 system pays the memory crunch directly, in a separate line item.
The ones in stock got more expensive too
Two of the in-stock boards have a price history I could read from the maker. The ODROID-M2 8GB was $115 in October 2025 and is $240 now, up 109%. IceWhale announced two ZimaBoard 2 increases on its forum, $219 to $279 in February and $279 to $339 in May, citing "the costs of DDR memory, eMMC storage, and certain key components." That is 55% on the 8GB board; the Pi 5 8GB went up 119% between December and April.
The mini PCs followed. Tom's Hardware's January table had the GMKtec G3 Plus at $156.87 in August 2025 and $246.99 in January. Jeff Geerling's April post put the cause plainly: "LPDDR chips now account for the majority of board cost from the vendors I've checked with," and "the hobbyist SBC market is dying—or at least on life support" (source). In August, Pine64 stopped making Linux boards altogether, telling customers that whether production continues "depends on the pricing situation for those components after mid 2027."
One warning if you shop by list price: prices on sold-out listings are not signals. Arace shows the sold-out ROCK 5B+ 16GB at $135, $40 below the sold-out 8GB, and parks some ROCK 5T variants at $9,999. The Wayback Machine's copy of the LattePanda Iota 8GB page from September 13 says $129; the live page on September 14 said $339. Both said out of stock.
The catch with the ARM boards is the kernel
Every RK3588 board above is faster than a Pi 5 on paper, and none of them gets Raspberry Pi OS. Armbian's pages show the split: the ROCK 5C and ROCK 5T are "Platinum," its manufacturer-backed tier, the Orange Pi 5 Plus is "Standard," and the Orange Pi 5 Pro and 5 Ultra have no page at all. All three listed boards offer a current 6.18 kernel next to a vendor 6.1.115 kernel. In a DietPi forum thread from May, an Orange Pi 5 owner asked how to leave the vendor kernel, and DietPi's maintainer answered that "the ancient Linux 6.1.115 has tons of other (less several) unpatched CVEs," recommending mainline unless you need features it still lacks, like the Wi-Fi on the 5 Max and Ultra. The popular Ubuntu for Rockchip project, 4,105 stars, has been archived since its last push in September 2025.
Mainline is catching up; Collabora got the RK3588 video decoders merged in February. But the Hacker News thread on the Tom's piece had the trade-off in two replies: "rockchip may have lots of raw power but software compatibility vs a N150 is very low," and, from the other side, the Pi is "designed from the ground up for Linux, while most mini PC home labs are the usual hit-and-miss with Linux distros" (thread). The spec sheets add their own gotchas: the Khadas Edge2 has no Ethernet jack, the ODROID-M2's M.2 slot runs a single PCIe 2.1 lane, and the ROCK 5C and 4D reach NVMe only through a ribbon adapter, the same arrangement that makes Pi 5 NVMe HATs a buying decision of their own.
What I would buy, by job
If the job needs GPIO and HATs, stay on the Pi 5. Nothing else here matches its accessory ecosystem. Its idle draw is also hard to beat: Jeff Geerling measured 2.4 to 3.3 W across the 2GB, 4GB and 8GB boards. If you'd rather pay Amazon's price than PiShop's, the 8GB board was $200 there today.
If the job is Docker, Home Assistant or Proxmox and you never touch a pin, the Beelink EQ14 is the complete 16GB box that is actually in stock, and it costs less than a finished Pi build. Owners and reviewers put its idle anywhere from 5 to 11.8 W; the spread, and how to land at the low end, is in the N150 power readings. Its RAM sits in a SO-DIMM slot rather than soldered, which fewer mini PCs offer than you would expect.
If you want ARM with a full-speed NVMe slot and two 2.5GbE ports, the Orange Pi 5 Plus 8GB or 16GB is the one a US buyer can get, from Orange Pi's own Amazon store. Plan on moving it to a mainline kernel, per the thread above. If Armbian's top support tier matters more than memory, the ROCK 5T is the other option, in the one 8GB configuration Arace had. What is the best alternative to Raspberry Pi 5?
It depends on the job. For a headless server, an N150 mini PC such as the Beelink EQ14 is complete and in stock at $369 with 16GB; for ARM with fast NVMe and 2.5GbE, the Orange Pi 5 Plus is available from Orange Pi's Amazon store. For GPIO and HAT projects, nothing on the market replaces the Pi 5's ecosystem.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Raspberry Pi 5?
Barely, as of September 2026. Of nine alternatives in stock, only the Radxa ROCK 5T 8GB ($179.90) is near the Pi 5 8GB's $175, and the ODROID-M2 16GB ($300) is $5 under the Pi 5 16GB. The ROCK 4D is $79.90 but only in 6GB. Most cheaper boards are sold out.
Why are Raspberry Pi alternatives out of stock?
Mostly memory prices. LPDDR now makes up most of a board's cost, so vendors have raised prices, paused production or let stock run out. Pine64 halted Linux boards until at least mid-2027. Hardkernel's ODROID-H4 series is suspended for a different reason, Intel CPU supply.
