I don't run Home Assistant, and I own no box built for it. What I can do cheaply is read what other people's installs report. Home Assistant publishes its opt-in usage analytics as one public JSON file, and this morning's copy counts 682,458 active installations, 453,863 of which run Home Assistant OS and report the board they boot on. Most "mini pc for home assistant" advice starts from the chip. I started from that installed base, then checked the official requirements, the Frigate camera docs, six Home Assistant forum threads, four Frigate GitHub threads, and today's Amazon listings.

The first surprise: half of those installs already run on x86, but most of that half is not a mini PC booting Home Assistant directly.

What 453,863 Home Assistant OS installs report

The board field splits the base into eight groups. ova is the virtual machine image, what you get when Home Assistant runs as a guest under Proxmox, VirtualBox or similar. generic-x86-64 is Home Assistant OS installed straight onto an Intel or AMD machine, the "mini PC for Home Assistant" setup in its purest form.

Reported boards across Home Assistant OS installs. The two x86 bars add up to 227,186 installs, or 50.1%. Every Raspberry Pi model together is 29.3%.

Before adding the two blue bars together I checked that ova really means x86. The same file counts supervisor architectures: 231,221 amd64 against 232,253 aarch64. The ova and generic-x86-64 boards sum to 227,186, about 4,000 short of the amd64 count, a gap the supervised installs (which report no board) can fill. So within the x86 half there are 1.6 installs in a VM for every one on bare metal. The history file shows the base settling on the OS route too: Home Assistant OS was 65.3% of installs in July 2021 and is 79.7% today, while the supervised method fell from 12.1% to 1.1%.

Two limits. Analytics is off unless the owner turns it on ("Nothing is sent from your installation unless you explicitly opt in"), so this is the base that opted in. And the history file carries no board data while the Wayback Machine holds no captures of the snapshot, so I can't show whether the x86 share is rising.

The official minimum is lower than anything you can buy new

The generic x86-64 install page gives no RAM or CPU minimum. Its requirements are about booting: the machine "must be 64-bit capable and be able to boot using UEFI", Secure Boot has to be off, and the boot drive must use 512-byte sectors, because "some NVMe SSDs and hard drives use native 4K sectors (4Kn) only. Home Assistant OS cannot boot from these." That last line is the one a new-SSD buyer can trip over.

For memory, the forum's most-linked answer is a community guide, "Choosing a Server for Home Assistant", which puts Home Assistant at about 700 MB idle, calls 2 GB "insufficient for virtualization", and reserves 8 GB and up for Proxmox. How much RAM a home server needs works through where that memory goes. In the August 2026 "Best MiniPC for HA?" thread, the minimum offered was to meet or exceed a Pi 4 or the Green, which is 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of eMMC per its spec page. Any x86 box from the last decade clears that. Of the 12 repliers who named their own machine, eight run used or older hardware, from a Dell Wyse 5010 at "~$20 USD on eBay" to three NUCs and a ThinkCentre M710q. Two run new Beelink N-series boxes. The person asking bought a Beelink S12 with an N95 and called the migration "easy and speedy" six days later.

The price gap moved in 2026

The Green launched in 2023 at "only $99 (MSRP)" and now lists at $199 / 179 €. Nabu Casa's pricing note blames RAM: "the component price of building a Home Assistant Green has nearly doubled since we started making the device." The boxes on the other side moved too. A community cost table from October 2025 listed a Beelink S12 N95 with 8 GB at $162. This morning, 13 N150 listings in an Amazon search from a New York address ran $275.49 to $399.00, median $329.00. An EQ14 owner in the August thread: "since the AI scam caused RAM and storage the price has risen."

Running costs are less dramatic. At the June 2026 US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh from EIA table 5.6.A, each watt drawn around the clock costs $1.61 a year, and the home server electricity cost calculator post shows why the wattage matters more than the rate.

The N150 range comes from the N150 power consumption dataset, including a Home Assistant OS owner who measured 6 W idle and 16 W flat out on a Kill-A-Watt. The used prices are one forum member's list, not listings I checked.

Where a mini PC earns its keep: Frigate, and the EQ14 warning

The autocomplete tail says what people add to the box: "mini pc for home assistant and frigate" and "and plex" lead it. Frigate, the camera recorder with object detection, is where the Green and the Pi run out. Its hardware page calls the Beelink EQ13 the author's "current favorite" for its N100 and dual network ports, and says an N100 "can only run one detector instance". The same page warns: "The Beelink EQ14 has some known compatibility issues, so you should avoid that model for now."

That warning has stood since at least June 2025, and it covers less than it sounds like. On 24 June 2025 a user quoted it and asked if it still applied, and a maintainer answered: "Some users have reported that the EQ14 doesn't support the Coral." Another maintainer had written that it works "fine as long as you use linux kernel 6.12 or newer" with OpenVINO (issue 15248). Frigate now says the Coral "is no longer recommended for new Frigate installations", and Home Assistant OS 18.2 ships kernel 6.18.39. In the same discussion one EQ14 owner runs four cameras with a Coral at about 25% CPU. Another runs two on OpenVINO at about 12%, after Intel GPU drivers failed on Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 25.04 and Debian 12.

The recommended EQ13 has its own problem. Frigate's Amazon link resolves to a listing now titled with an N200, not an N100, and from a New York address it reads "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock." I am not linking it.

Two more reports matter for cameras. A forum thread on VAAPI hardware decoding stopping after two hours started on an N100, and an N150 owner on Home Assistant OS reported the same in September 2025. And an owner running Proxmox, Home Assistant, Frigate and Asterisk on an 8 GB N100 wrote this month that "the bigger limitation in my particular mini PC is memory", so detection runs on only some of eight cameras. The N100 vs N150 comparison found the two chips 0.9% apart on benchmarks, so RAM and ports decide it.

What the numbers point to

If Home Assistant is all the box will do, the installed base agrees with the forum: a Green, a Pi you already own, or a used thin client drawing 4 W is enough. If cameras, Plex or Proxmox are coming, buy x86 with 16 GB and two network ports, check that the SSD isn't 4Kn-only, and put the Zigbee coordinator on the network, since a USB dongle "locks you to one host", as one forum member put it.

From today's Amazon reads, the Beelink Mini S13 N150 is $329.00, but its 12 GB is soldered, which rules it out for a large Frigate build. The Beelink Mini S12 Pro N100 16 GB is $369.00 with 271 ratings. The Beelink EQ14 is $369.00 with dual 2.5GbE; skip it if you want a Coral, but on OpenVINO and a current kernel the owner reports are positive. What are the minimum requirements for Home Assistant on a mini PC?

The official x86-64 page asks for a 64-bit machine that boots with UEFI, Secure Boot turned off, and a boot drive with 512-byte sectors, since Home Assistant OS cannot boot from 4Kn-only drives. It gives no RAM figure. A widely linked community guide puts Home Assistant at about 700 MB idle and suggests 4 GB for Home Assistant OS alone, and 8 GB or more if you plan to run Proxmox.

Is Home Assistant Green or a mini PC better?
