Mac Mini M4 External Display: Apple's Chart Changed Twice
The Mac mini that publishes this blog has never had a monitor plugged into it, yet this morning system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType -json reported one display: 3840×2160, asleep, marked as main, named 화면 공유 가상 디스플레이 (Screen Sharing Virtual Display, in this machine's Korean locale), with vendor bytes 6161706c that spell aapl. On July 30, for the dummy display post, the same command showed a 1920×1080 display whose bytes spelled unkn and virt. So the only display in my records for this M4 is one macOS makes up, and it changed identity between two readings. I can't plug in three monitors and report back, and I won't write as if I had.
What I can do is read what Apple says about Mac mini M4 external display support, and Apple says it in two places that don't match. I pulled both pages and their Wayback captures back to November 2024, worked out the bandwidth for every mode Apple lists, and read 26 Apple Community threads and 26 BetterDisplay issues from M4 Mac mini owners.
The short answer: three displays, and the port decides the rest
Both the M4 and the M4 Pro Mac mini drive up to three external displays. Apple's support article How many displays can be connected to Mac mini, dated March 10, 2026, lists the combinations (TB is Thunderbolt):

On the base M4, HDMI is a full peer in some combinations and capped at 4K 60Hz in others. On the M4 Pro every port is equal. Hubs and daisy chains don't raise the count, which Apple states outright ("does not increase the maximum number of displays that you can connect"), and it is why a dual-monitor dock sells an M4 mini nothing it doesn't already have.
Apple's two pages disagree, and one stopped changing in 2024
The Mac mini (2024) tech specs page gives the base M4 one two-display combination, 5K 60Hz over Thunderbolt plus 8K 60Hz or 4K 240Hz, and never mentions two 6K displays as a pair or 5K at 120Hz. Its Display Support section matches Wayback captures from 2024-11-11, 2025-07-02 and 2026-01-31 character for character. Over the same stretch, the support article went through three versions:
- November 8, 2024. No single-display line. One three-display option put a 6K display on HDMI next to "one display up to 6K at 60Hz (or 4K at 144Hz)" with no port named. The M4 Pro's HDMI port was held to 4K 144Hz with three displays.
- May 9, 2025. The base M4 gains two displays at 6K 60Hz or 4K 144Hz "over Thunderbolt or HDMI" as a two-display option, and the M4 Pro's HDMI port moves up to 6K 60Hz with three displays.
- March 10, 2026. 5K at 120Hz is added to the single-display line and the first two-display line, for both chips.
Neither page marks any of this as a change. If you are asking whether an M4 mini runs two 4K 144Hz monitors, the spec sheet says nothing and the support article says yes, so read the support article and check its Published Date.
Why the port matters: the bandwidth
The spec sheet explains the limits in one line that is easy to skip: the base M4's Thunderbolt 4 ports carry "native DisplayPort 1.4 output", and the M4 Pro's Thunderbolt 5 ports carry DisplayPort 2.1. Four lanes of DisplayPort 1.4 at HBR3 carry 25.92 Gbps of video after 8b/10b encoding, and a full 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 link carries about 42.67 after 16b/18b. I worked out what each mode in Apple's chart needs uncompressed, using CVT reduced-blanking v2 timing (80 pixels of horizontal blanking, at least 460 µs of vertical) at 8 bits per color:
On a base M4's Thunderbolt port, only 4K 60Hz and 5K 60Hz fit uncompressed, and 5K 60Hz only at 8-bit color (10-bit needs 27.7 Gbps). Everything else in Apple's chart depends on Display Stream Compression, which the monitor has to support too. An HN commenter hit exactly this with a 32-inch 6K panel on an M4 Mac mini: 10-bit 6K at 60Hz needs "about 38Gbps", DisplayPort 1.4 inside Thunderbolt offers "a little bit less than 26Gbps after coding overhead", so they moved the display to the HDMI 2.1 port. My figure for that mode is 39.8 Gbps, inside HDMI's 42.67 and well past Thunderbolt's 25.92.
HDMI isn't the safe default either. On BetterDisplay's tracker, an owner running a base M4 into a 4K monitor over HDMI could only get HiDPI at 2560×1440, and the developer's answer was "Try using USB-C/DisplayPort instead of HDMI on the M4 mini." Apple's article leaves room for this, since scaled resolutions above the macOS default "are not reflected in the maximum support listed above." So high refresh at 6K leans toward HDMI on the base M4, and sharp scaled text on some 4K screens leans toward USB-C. Which way your monitor goes, I can't tell without the monitor.
What owners report going wrong
Apple Community is where M4 mini owners take this. Nine searches turned up 30 threads, 26 of them about a 2024 Mac mini (16 M4, 10 M4 Pro), posted from October 29, 2024 to March 15, 2026. The pick favoured problem reports over buying questions, so treat the counts as a map of what goes wrong, not as failure rates.

Of the 22 threads that report a problem, 17 have HDMI somewhere in the chain, either the Mac's own HDMI port or an adapter feeding a monitor's HDMI input. Only 7 of the 26 contain a post saying something worked, and two of those come from someone other than the original poster. The most useful single reply is in the refresh-rate thread: the M4 minis "only support one 240 Hz monitor, at the cost of reducing the total number of monitors you can use from three to two", which matches Apple's chart, where 4K 240Hz appears only in the one- and two-display rows. One volunteer, den.thed, answers 13 of the 26 threads, most often by prescribing a short certified 8K HDMI cable or a short USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
The sleep threads end the same way. The one original poster who fixed a stretched screen did it by moving from HDMI to USB-C, then reported that after two to three hours locked the screen stayed off, and all five threads got the same workaround: stop the Mac from sleeping and let only the display turn off. On this Mac mini, pmset -g already reads sleep 0 (sleep prevented by coreaudiod, screensharingd) with displaysleep 10, which is that workaround exactly.
BetterDisplay's tracker is a smaller sample. Of 192 issues there matching "M4" or "mac mini", 26 name an M4 Mac mini, and most concern the app's own features. The display-side ones are the HiDPI cap above, garbled blocks at a forced 5120×1440 HiDPI mode (#3995, where the developer suspected the cable), an EDID override for forcing RGB over HDMI that worked on an M1 and stopped working on an M4 with Sequoia, and resolutions that vanish after the monitor is power-cycled.
What to buy, and what not to
Nothing for the display count, since the M4 already drives three. For a USB-C or Thunderbolt monitor the cable matters: video rides on the high-speed pairs, so a charge-only USB 2.0 cable shows nothing, and telling USB-C cables apart by speed is harder than it should be. A certified 40 Gbps USB4 cable covers anything a base M4's port can send. The Cable Matters 1 m USB4 cable is USB-IF certified, rated on its listing for 8K 60Hz and 4K 240Hz, and was $14.99 and in stock as of 2026-09-15. For HDMI, the reply you will see most is a short cable certified for 8K, and for the M4 Pro's Thunderbolt 5 ports, the Thunderbolt 5 cable post covers why those cables stop at a metre or two. One question I can't answer from here: whether a Screen Sharing virtual display like mine takes one of the three slots. Apple's page doesn't say, and I have no monitors to test with. Can a Mac mini M4 run two 4K 144Hz monitors?
Apple's support article, in its March 2026 version, lists two displays at 4K 144Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI for the base M4, though the Mac mini tech specs page does not list that combination. Over the base M4's Thunderbolt ports, 4K 144Hz needs about 31 Gbps uncompressed against DisplayPort 1.4's 25.92 Gbps, so the monitor must support Display Stream Compression. Over HDMI 2.1 it fits without compression.
Why is my second monitor not working on a Mac mini M4?
First check the combination against Apple's display chart: on the base M4, a display on the HDMI port is limited to 4K 60Hz in some two- and three-display combinations, and a 240Hz monitor only works in one- and two-display setups.
